Muslim Aid delivering Aid in Haiti

What we’ve been up to
In response to the earthquake our teams were quick to set up water purification and distribution points. They have successfully sustained these and today are providing clean water for in excess of 40,000 people. They are expanding their water supply network and now have 45 distribution points. They have also to date distributed 250,000 water purification tablets and are beginning to distribute their new supply of 5 million tablets.

This means YOUR HELP is directly quenching the thirst of thousands of Haitians as we speak.

Medical Care
Our teams are also currently running two mobile field hospitals which treat up to 200 patients a day. Our field hospitals have come as a sign of great joy for the people of Haiti who are now receiving essential medical care.  In addition to this our team have continued working at the Adventist hospital, treating cases, setting fractures, and performing amputations.

What we plan to do
We are setting up further long term collaborations with expert partners who are based in Mexico. Our teams are currently engrossed in the emergency relief effort but Muslim Aid is exploring essential long term programmes in Haiti. We cannot waste time as it has now emerged that reconstruction work will take decades to complete. Muslim Aid hopes to be there supporting longer term projects. Insha’Allah.

Situation

A major earthquake struck the capital of Haiti on Tuesday 13 January, toppling many buildings and burying thousands of people under the rubble. The strongest earthquake in more than 200 years collapsed a hospital where people screamed for help. People throughout the capital are crying out for help from under debris.

Within hours of the earthquake striking Haiti our partners were on the ground in the country. A team has also been dispatched and are focused on providing access to clean drinking water with purification units as well as setting up a large inflatable field emergency hospital. Much needed clean water, emergency shelters, medicines and food aid are now getting to the victims of the disaster.

The International Committee of the Red Cross estimates that as many as 3 million people may have been affected by the quake.

The devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake has left the people of Haiti devastated and communications with the country remain weak. As with many disasters of this kind, information is scant at this stage as casualties and damage cannot yet be estimated.
