MAA Delivers Aid to Gaza Flood Victims
Thanks to your donations, Muslim Aid Australia, through local partner Families Relief, were able to distribute food packages, gas lights, and ComfortAid to people (especially orphans and children) who were badly affected by the flood.
Situation
Torrential rain that started on 18 January 2010 has caused a massive flood in some densely populated areas ofthe Gaza Strip. The flood is fatal and has also caused about 400 families to be displaced. The situation became worse when areas bordering the Gaza Valley were also inundated.
The Wadi Gaza, a low lying farming area situated to the south of Gaza City and mostly inhabited by Bedouins, is among those severely affected. Flood could be seen covering an area of approximately one (1) square kilometre, all the way to the Sea of Gaza.
Unfortunately, the soil was unable to absorb the huge mass of water and this resulted in dirty water, sand, dust and garbage contaminating the ground floors of homes. Among the worst hit areas was where the poorest of the poor people in the Gaza Strip live. Living in their simple shelters and houses, they have yet to rebuild their lives after the late-2008 war.
