Afghanistan

Muslim Aid Australia have implemented a project to set up a Permaculture training centre in Kabul where men, women and youth will be able to come from all over Afghanistan to relearn some of the lost traditions and acknowledge new ways of looking after the earth and growing their food. Permaculture concepts can be applied to waste disposal - which in Afghanistan is usually non-existent - so teaching composting and using waste constructively would be of huge benefit. Another area which has tremendous potential is the harvesting of water which is abundant after the snows, yet lost because they do not use any techniques for storing or conserving it. Read more

Besides ensuring a continuous supply of vegetables and fruits to the patients and staff at the hospital, surplus produce will generate income for the organisation. The project will create 1,500 jobs. What is Permaculture?

The philosophy behind Permaculture is one of working with, rather than against nature in a pattern which functions to benefit life in all its forms.

Permaculture (permanent agriculture) is the conscious design and maintenance of agriculturally productive ecosystems which have the diversity, stability, and resilience of natural ecosystems. It is the harmonious integration of landscape and people providing their food, energy, shelter, and other material and non-material needs in a sustainable way.

Without permanent agriculture there is no possibility of a stable social order.
