The end of the Financial Year 2010 is around the corner, and we pray that it has brought you prosperity (ie nikmatullah!).
We also write to remind you that you could spread the prosperity even further by making a Tax Deductible donation towards Muslim Aid Australia’s Sustainable Development & Agricultural projects. MAA has been very active in developing Sustainable Development & Agriculture projects abroad, in far flung places such as Afghanistan, Gaza (OPT), Bangladesh, and Jordan.
After much research and planning, MAA understands that Sustainable Development & Agriculture is the key to poverty reduction;
- It is central to the livelihoods of the rural poor who, in spite of rapid urbanisation, still account for the majority (around 70%) of the world’s poor.
- It is the economic heart of most countries and the most likely source of significant economic growth.
- In Africa, it provides two thirds of employment, half of exports and over one third of Gross National Income (GNI).
- In Asia, where economic growth and diversification have been rapid, agriculture provides jobs for 60 per cent of the working population and generates 27 per cent of GNI. The fastest rates of economic growth have occurred where agricultural productivity has risen the most – the reverse is also true.
- Growth in agriculture benefits the poor most. Recent research shows that a one per cent increase in agricultural yields reduces the percentage of people living on less than $1 per day by between 0.6 and 1.2 per cent. No other economic activity generates the same benefits for the poor
