During the most important month in the Islamic calendar; the period known as Ramadan when fasting is obligatory during the entire month; Muslim Aid works on behalf of the Australian Muslim community in bringing happiness and joy to poor and needy people across the world. All of these were made possible, Alhamdulillah, through the generous donations of the Australian Muslims.
Since its establishment in 1989, MAA has been accepting donations in the form of Zakat-ul-Fitr, Fidya and Sadaqah during the holy month of Ramadan. Many of our valued donors also maximise their deeds by making Zakat-ul-Mal contributions in Ramadan.
MAA applies Zakat-ul-Fitr, Fidya and Sadaqah contributions to support activities benefiting the poor and needy such as Fast2Feed, iftar meals, purchase of Eid gifts (e.g. food parcels or new clothes), and cash disbursements during Ramadan. Recipients countries are chosen based on needs, while activities to be carried out depend on logistics and available infrastructure.

Zakat-ul-Fitr – a special charity performed in the month of Ramadan. Even its name comes from the fact that it must be paid before the Eid-ul-Fitr prayer marking the end of the holy month. It is incumbent upon every (capable) Muslim, male and female. The head of the family must pay on behalf of his/herself and on behalf of spouses, children and even servants.
Fidya – defined by scholars as a compensation or expiatory payment for missing fasting days during Ramadan, where one must pay a serving of food to someone poor person, in addition to making up up the missed fasts.
Sadaqah – charity in its most general sense and literally means spending out of the wealth that Allah SWT has given. In an even broader sense, also means using our energy, talents, resources or other possessions to help and do good to those in need.
Kaffara - ($10 to feed 1 person)
1. A fast broken deliberately requires a person to either fast 60 consecutive days or feed 60 people.
