Children around the world are deprived of basic necessities such as education, health services, shelter, and access to safe, clean water. Natural and man-made disasters leave a trail of misery, intensifying the pre-existing conditions of poverty and deprivation. Children, especially orphans are the most vulnerable and suffer the most. They are often exploited as cheap or slave labour, and rarely have the chance to attend school. Without clean water or even basic health care, they fall sick and sometimes die.
The primary objectives of our OrphanAid programme are to provide basic necessities for orphans in improving their health, nutrition, and education. These are done socially and morally regardless of their race, creed or gender. The programme is designed to address the needs of the orphans and improve their lives in a way that respects and preserves the customs and traditions of the country in which we operate.

Becoming a part of our OrphanAid programme goes further than meeting the needs of just one child. Our many years of experience have taught us that the only way to make a lasting difference in a child’s life is to benefit other children and families within the community. Our OrphanAid programme provides assistance to orphanages where funds directly benefit the needs of the orphans and indirectly benefit the rest of the community through developmental programmes, water and sanitation, health care programmes and environmental programmes. These are what we call Plus Programmes.
Plus Programme 1 - Plus Immunisation
The ability to immunise children against many childhood diseases saves millions of lives annually. It is also an affordable means of protecting whole communities and it reduces poverty. MAA conducts Immunisation Programmes to provide life saving vaccination against preventable disease such as Hepatitis B, Polio and Measles.
Plus Programme 2 - Plus Water & Sanitation
In order to combat water shortages and reduce associated diseases, Muslim Aid Australia conducts Water & Sanitations programmes by constructing water tanks in areas where there is little or no access to safe drinking water.

Plus Programme 3 - Plus Education
Education and poverty have an impact on each other. Many children, particularly orphans do not have the luxury of a decent education. They often cannot progress within society and fall into a vicious cycle of deprivation, leading to lifelong hardship and poverty. MAA’s educational programmes provide opportunity for children to obtain an education and ensure schools have the essential facilities such as stationeries and even photocopiers to enhance the learning techniques.
Plus Programme 4 - Plus Nutrition
Malnutrition is responsible for over six million child deaths every year while health consequences of inadequate nutrition are enormous. MAA’S Nutritional feeding programmes provided nutritious meals to children when they attend school. Their education will help them to escape from hunger and global poverty.

Why One-to-One Sponsorship Doesn’t Work
While individual orphan sponsorship has been our most popular programme, MAA has come to learn that one-to-one sponsorship is more costly to administer than group sponsorship. Individual sponsorship is also unfair because it picks out only a few individuals within a group and leaves the rest without assistance. In many cases, some orphans with siblings received assistance while their siblings were left without. The psychological impact this could have on a child would only result in deepening an open wound of hardship and despair.
Another problem that has recently emerged in war torn countries such as Palestine and Afghanistan, is the inability to keep track of individual orphans. War may force people to flee, or extended families may reclaim an orphan, or mothers and their orphans may decide to move to another part of the country. These issues have forced MAA to develop OrphanAid – a group sponsorship programme providing financial assistance to orphanages by offering a wider range of services and reaching out to many more orphans.
