Gaza – indentified as the world’s largest open aired prison with a population of about 1.416 million people living on area of 365 km2. It is one of most densely populated areas in the world
The continued conflict with Israel has left the Palestinians to face major difficulties in Gaza, including shortages of food, water, and medicine. Furthermore, Gaza's agricultural markets continue to suffer from access restrictions. Agriculture has a fundamental role in the fight against poverty and that’s why Muslim Aid Australia and partner NGO El-Wafa Charitable Society are implementing a 2 Year Sustainable Development and Agricultural project which will improve the Palestinian economy and help the Palestinians to become self sufficient.

Agriculture is central to the livelihoods of the rural poor who, in spite of rapid urbanisation, still account for the majority (around 70 per cent) of the world’s poor. It is the economic heart of most countries and the most likely source of significant economic growth.
|
|
The fastest rates of economic growth have occurred where agricultural productivity has risen the most.
Growth in agriculture benefits the poor the most. Recent research shows that a one per cent increase in agricultural yields reduces the percentage of people living on less than $1 per day by between 0.6 and 1.2 per cent. No other economic activity generates the same benefits for the poor
