The Borehole is between 150-200 metres deep, which means the water is fresh and will sustainably provide a constant source of water for its community of 36,000+ people

With $25, you will purchase 5 shares in the borehole that will live on long after you give.

Why Somalia?

Currently, we’re constructing boreholes in Somalia.

Somalia, renowned for its deep-rooted history and vibrant culture, is currently facing one of its most challenging water crises. Consecutive droughts have left the nation thirsty, triggering a series of issues, from dwindling food supplies to a drop in agricultural activities.

Somalia’s Water Crisis

The 2020-2023 drought, considered the most severe in four decades, brought the country to the brink of famine resulting in an estimated 43,000 deaths.

The Water shortage in Somalia has meant farming across the country has stopped. And now – 4.6 million people are facing crisis levels of hunger and it is projected that 1.5 million children will suffer acute malnutrition – that is, if they don’t receive the water they need to start farming again [Relief Web]

5.2 million people in Somalia are in need of water now.

The Story of Uthman

The early Muslims face significant challenges in accessing water in Madinah after their migration. The most drinkable water came from a well named Rumah, but its owner charged people high amounts for taking even small amounts of water, which made it difficult for the Muslims to access.

When Uthman ibn ‘Affan RA learned of the situation and the need of the well for the Muslim community, he approached the Jewish owner with an offer to purchase it. The owner declined Uthman’s exuberant offer, unwilling to part with his lucrative income source. Cleverly, ‘Uthman proposed buying or renting half of the well, allowing each of them to use the well on alternate days. The owner agreed, but what he didn’t understand was that Uthman RA was purchasing the well for the Muslim community for the sake of Allah, not worldly rewards.

On Uthman’s designated days, he allowed everyone to draw water for free. This generosity left the owner with no customers, forcing him to sell his share of the well to Uthman.

Uthman then declared the well a Waqf for the Muslim community, and till this day – the well is still active and provides water today subhana’Allah.

The well caused date palm trees to grow around it, and now the money generated from these trees go to orphans, widows and developments for the Muslim community.

Uthman RA may have never expected his generosity to be a sadaqah jariyah till this day, subhan’Allah.

Note: At MAA, we believe we have a duty to fight injustice at every level, big and small. It’s not enough to give aid to the most vulnerable and marginalised after harm has befallen them; we must stand up for them and empower their voices. To fulfil our collective obligation, MAA may dedicate a portion of your sadaqah donations to this cause to create change and dismantle the forces that harm the most marginalised.
