What is Qurban? The Meaning, Purpose & Rewards

Understanding Qurban: More Than Just a Sacrifice

Every year, Muslims around the world take part in Qurban, also known as Udhiyah, during the blessed days of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar. But what exactly is Qurban, and why is it so important?

Qurban means “sacrifice” in Arabic. It commemorates the devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who was prepared to sacrifice his son Ismail (AS) in obedience to Allah’s command. Instead, Allah replaced Ismail with a ram, rewarding Prophet Ibrahim’s submission with mercy.

Today, Muslims honour this legacy by sacrificing a sheep, cow, or goat after Eid al-Adha prayers on the 10th to the 13th of Dhul Hijjah. This year, Dhul Hijjah begins on 28 May 2025, inshaAllah.

Why Do We Give Qurban?

Qurban is more than a ritual, it’s a powerful act of worship that reminds us of:

  • Submission to Allah’s will

  • Sharing blessings with the poor

  • Strengthening our connection to the Sunnah

The meat is distributed to the needy, ensuring no family is left out on the day of Eid. For many, this is the only time they enjoy fresh meat all year.

Neither their meat nor blood reaches Allah. Rather, it is your piety that reaches Him - 22:37

The Global Impact

When you give Qurban through a charity, the impact can be far-reaching. In parts of the world where meat is a luxury, your sacrifice becomes someone’s celebration. For families affected by poverty, war, or displacement, it may be the only time of the year they eat fresh meat.

The Rewards of Qurban

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Neither their meat nor blood reaches Allah. Rather, it is your piety that reaches Him."
(22:37)

This shows the immense reward for those who perform Qurban sincerely. It is a chance to earn Allah’s pleasure, benefit the poor, and purify your wealth.
