Reminder: 3 Things to Do before Eid-al-Adha

Written by Shazil Rehman

The blessed days of Dhul Hijjah are just around the corner! If you are not among the lucky millions performing Hajj this year, don’t worry, here are 3 important things you can do and in sha Allah benefit from before Eid-al-Adha:

1) Fast the first 9 days of Dhul Hijjah, especially on Arafat day (the day before Eid): Abu Qatadah Al-Ansari narrated, “The Messenger of Allah (SAW) was asked about fasting on the day of Arafah (the 9th of Dhul Hijjah). He replied, “Fasting on the day of Arafah is an expiation for the preceding year and the following year.”

2) Increase your good deeds and seek repentance: The Prophet (SAW) said: “There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days (Dhul Hijjah).” He commanded us to recite a lot of Tasbeeh (Subhan-Allaah), Tahmeed (Al-hamdu Lillaah) and Takbeer (Allaahu Akbar) during this time. Praying Sunnah salat, reading Qur’an, remembering Allaah, supplication (making dua’), giving charity, honouring parents, upholding family ties, visiting the sick - there are so many things we can do! Don't forget that this is a very good time to also repent for your sins so make the most of it!

3) Udhiyah/Qurban: Sacrificing a livestock animal is an act of worship prescribed in the Glorious Qur’an where it says in Surah Hajj, “It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is piety from you that reaches Him.” Qurban is something we should do if we have the means and it can be done on the first 3 days of Eid. Fortunately these days, it is very convenient to order your Qurban through an organization like ours and as an added advantage, you get to feed the most needy and poor as well.
